How to get your EV Charger Installed in Illinois for Free!

How to get your EV Charger Installed for Free! (With Tax Incentives and Rebates)

With the combination of federal, state, and utility incentives, it’s possible to have an EV charger installed at little to no cost. The federal Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit covers up to 30% of the installation costs, up to $1,000. Additionally, Illinois’ EV Rebate Program offers up to $1,500 for eligible residential EV charger installations, and many local utility companies, such as ComEd or Ameren Illinois, provide rebates for Level 2 chargers and incentives for energy-efficient charging practices. By stacking these savings, the total cost of installation can be significantly reduced—or even fully covered—depending on your expenses and the rebates available. At Avino Electric, we’ll guide you through the process to ensure you maximize these incentives, so you can enjoy the convenience of home EV charging for minimal out-of-pocket expense.

Federal Tax Credit for EV Charger Installation

The federal government offers a valuable tax credit through the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit. This program provides a tax credit for 30% of the total installation cost of an EV charger, up to a maximum of $1,000 for residential properties.

Eligibility Requirements:

• The EV charger must be installed at your primary residence.
• The charger must meet specific requirements for safety and energy efficiency.

How to Claim It:

When filing your federal taxes, include IRS Form 8911 to claim this credit. Make sure to save your installation receipts and documentation.

Illinois EV Rebate Program

The State of Illinois supports EV owners through the Illinois Electric Vehicle Rebate Program, which provides rebates for EV purchases and EV charging equipment.

EV Charger Rebate Details:

• The rebate can cover up to $1,500 of the cost of purchasing and installing an EV charger.
• Rebates are typically offered on a first-come, first-served basis, so early application is key.

Eligibility Requirements:

• The applicant must reside in Illinois.
• The EV charger must be installed at a residence or qualifying property within the state.
• Visit the Illinois EPA website for up-to-date information on application windows and required forms.

Utility Company Rebates

Several utility companies in Illinois offer additional incentives for EV charger installations. These programs often aim to encourage energy-efficient charging practices and support grid stability.

Common Programs:

ComEd EV Charging Incentives:

• Offers rebates for installing Level 2 chargers.
• Encourages the use of off-peak charging to save on energy costs.

Ameren Illinois Rebates:

• Provides rebates for residential customers installing EV chargers.
• Includes additional savings for participants in demand-response programs.

Pro Tip: Contact your utility provider directly to learn about their current EV incentives.

Benefits of Combining Incentives

One of the best strategies is to combine federal, state, and utility rebates for maximum savings. For example:

1. Claim the federal tax credit for 30% of your costs.
2. Apply for the Illinois EV Rebate Program.
3. Use a utility rebate to further reduce installation expenses.

This approach can cover a significant portion of the installation costs, making a home EV charger more affordable than ever.
